  • The meetings are the next formal step towards the formation of a new government

The leaders of the political parties with MPs in Spain's Congreso have met with King Felipe this week in a round of contacts which is the next formal step towards the formation of a new government.

After talking to each leader to find out who their party's MPs would support as prime minister, the king will propose a candidate to go forward to the investiture debate.

This is expected to be Socialist leader and acting PM Pedro Sánchez, who won the elections, but still needs support from other parties to reach the 176 vote majority.

He was the last of the leaders to visit the king on Thursday afternoon, following Albert Rivera (Cs, pictured) and Pablo Casado (PP).
