Called for by right-of-centre opposition parties, there was disagreement over how many took part in last Sunday's rally and turnout was probably not as large as expected.

But the impact of the gathering in Madrid to defend "the unity of Spain", amid fears of concessions to separatists in Catalonia, succeeded in toughening the government's rhetoric on the region, said commentators.

This then helped push separatist parties away from their crucial support for the national budgets of Pedro Sánchez.
