Prime minister Pedro Sánchez announced this week that he is putting forward the former Spain basketball coach, Pepu Hernández, to be the Socialist party's candidate for mayor of Madrid in the May local elections.

The coach, who still has to win a primary election held in Madrid, was named by Sánchez after several ministers, former ministers and top officials turned down the role.

His squeaky-clean image was tarred on Thursday when it emerged that Hernández created a firm to manage properties and income to save on tax, according to the newspaper El Confidencial.
