A 38-year-old man from Darro, in Granada province, died last Saturday after falling some 200 metres while mountaineering in the area of the Sierra Nevada mountains known as El Corral del Veleta. Guardia Civil and emergency services were alerted by other mountaineers in the area.

The dead man was abseiling on a slope that was reportedly covered in a layer of ice. The Guardia Civil's mountain rescue team, Sereim, was immediately summoned as well as medical services via helicopter, removing the man's body to Granada city.

Staff at the Sierra Nevada mountain park had warned of the dangerous conditions because of ice in the upper reaches of the mountains.
