The blast of cold air stretching from the Arctic across western Europe this week brought unexpected snow to higher ground.
Nighttime temperatures plummeted below zero in towns and cities in Castile and the heavy snowfall caused problems on mountain passes, especially on the borders with the northern regions of Asturias and Cantabria.
People were unprepared for the unseasonal blast and rescue operations were carried out in some areas. Two lost walkers were found in the Pyrenees but a man swept out to see by waves in Galicia was still missing.
There was excitement in ski resorts, which have started preparing their runs earlier than usual.
