The march of supermarket chain Mercadona continues. Latest data for the period April to June this year shows that 25 per cent of money spent in Spain on food and day-to-day household supplies in big stores goes to the Valencia-based company.
This figure represents a 0.6 per cent rise on a year ago. The worst-performing chain is Dia, which has fallen to a 7.6 per cent market share. Carrefour has fallen too to 8.3 per cent, while the biggest rise was at Lidl, which now has 4.9 per cent.
