  • Spain's new leader made his first contact with the US president, whose intentions were not matched by all in Belgium's capital

Amid this week's tensions between the United States and its allies at the NATO summit in Brussels, Donald Trump and Spain's new prime minister, Pedro Sánchez had the first opportunity to shake hands.

As is the concensus between the other NATO country leaders, Spain's Sánchez is resisting Trump's call to spend more money on defence.

At the summit, Trump showed frustration towards allies who he believes have not spent sufficiently on the measure.

In 2014, NATO members pledged they would expend two per cent of their GDP output on defence by 2024.
