'Badly restored' Saint George statue criticised
  • The faded historic polichrome paint disappeared beneath three coats of fresh plaster paint, creating a crude, brightly-coloured new look

The regional government in Navarre has said it will try and have a sixteenth-century statue of St George on horseback put back to how it was after a parish church in the town of Estella decided to ask a local company to paint it.

The faded historic polichrome paint disappeared beneath three coats of fresh plaster paint, creating a crude, brightly-coloured new look that has horrified residents and brought ridicule in the international press.

Conservation experts say the lost paintwork may not have been the orginal and may have dated only from the eigthteen century but using x-ray technology they are trying to see if the controversial new layers can be taken off again.
