Thousands of people attended the funeral service held for Gabriel in Almeria cathedral on Tuesday. Among them was the Interior minister, Juan Ignacio Zoido, and deputy prime minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría. Zoido was unable to hold back his tears when Gabriel's mother, Patricia Ramírez, handed him her son's blue scarf as a thank you for the universally praised work of the police and emergency services.
Other authorities, including the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Susana Díaz, had visited the family on Monday at the funeral chapel.
The boy's parents have also been praised for their dignity and restraint after the horrific events unfolded. Ramírez spoke on radio and outside the cathedral, urging people to keep a positive sentiment alive and not to dwell on the wicked witch, referring to Ana Julia.
