New words to national anthem stir emotions

  • Politicians took turns to either praise or criticise Marta Sánchez's performance

Spain's national anthem is known for being one of the few in the world without any words.

So when popular singing 'diva' Marta Sánchez sang a version with her own emotional lyrics last weekend it caused a social media storm.

Conservative politicians, including the prime minister, said how rousing they were.

But lefter-leaning ones said they didn't see that adding words to the anthem, known as the Royal March, was a priority, as the debate over what lyrics would suit it was ignited yet again.
