King Felipe VI, along with Queen Letizia and their two daughters, presided over the armed forces parade in Madrid to mark the 12 October National Day.

More crowds than usual turned out with their Spanish flags to watch the event which saw 4,000 military troops, as well as representative of the National Police and Guardia Civil, march past.

The morning's events ended in tragedy as one of the Eurofighter jets that took part in the traditional fly-past in Madrid crashed on its return to the Los Llanos air base in Albacete, killing the pilot.
