Catalonian independence supporters took to the streets on Monday for the annual Diada de Cataluña "national day" rally.

With the controversial referendum planned for 1 October this year's march gained greater significance as a demonstration of support for the regional government's defiance of the prohibition of the vote by the Constitutional court.

Thousands of people walked through Barcelona's streets, many of them waving "esteladas", the name given to the Catalonian flag and wearing T-shirts and shouting slogans in favour of the referendum and of a vote for independence.
