The family of a 25-year-old woman who was crushed to death in a freak accident in a hospital lift is taking legal action against the hospital and the maintenance company.
Rocío Cortés had just given birth to her third child by caesarean in the Virgen de Valme hospital in Seville last Sunday and was being transferred by bed to the ward when the lift started moving before the doors closed, trapping her head.
The family, in a state of shock, said that they were determined to find the person “responsible”. The lift had only just passed its last inspection on 12 August.
The Junta de Andalucía’s regional minister for Health, Marina Álvarez, said that the accident was “quick, unusual and tragic” and announced a full investigation.
Rocío was from the Dos Hermanas area of Seville and had two other children. Her new-born baby girl wasn’t with her at the time and sources said she was due to be operated on for a heart condition.
