Juana Rivas, the Granada woman who is in hiding since failing to comply with a court order to give up her two children in late July, must hand them over to her former partner, Granadas top court ruled on Thursday.

Juana brought her children, aged 11 and 3, back to Spain from Sardinia a year ago.

The father of her children had been condemned in his native Italy on a domestic abuse charge in 2009 and Juana returned to Granada to make a further complaint against him in 2016. However, the father has taken sustained legal action to recover the children.

Juanas refusal to hand them over has drawn widespread attention. Supporters claim that the authorities havent carried out their duty to protect her and her family but the judge on Thursday disagreed.
