The Supreme Court has rejected the appeal launched by Lionel Messis defence lawyers against the 21-month suspended prison sentence handed to the famous Argentinian footballer by a Barcelona court last year.

Messi and his father were accused of failing to declare his image rights to the Spanish tax authorities from 2007 to 2009, thus avoiding 4.1 million euros in tax.

His father, Jorge Horacio Messi had his sentence reduced from 21 to 15 months by the top appeal court.

Neither men will go to jail, however, as the sentence is below two years, but Lionel will be required to pay a fine of 2.1 million euros.
