The Eisenhower Fellows also chose to honour a well-known Malaga writer at this year’s ceremony. Manuel Alcántara was given the lifetime achievement prize at the First Amendment awards, although, at his 89 years of age, he was too frail to travel to New York. Alcántara has written more than 20,000 articles and hundreds of poems. For many years he has been a columnist in Vocento’s Spanish regional newspapers. Receiving the prize on his behalf, Manuel Castillo of SUR said that Alcántara had “an intense way of looking at the world, like Cervantes, with drops of scepticism”.
