Unemployment falls a record amount in last year

  • There were 86,000 fewer jobless in Spain in December, helped by extra Christmas hiring, as Malaga also saw a significant reduction

The number of registered unemployed in Spain fell 86,849 in December, helped by temporary jobs over Christmas. In the whole of 2016, there were 390,534 fewer jobless compared to 2015, which is a record fall in the unemployment total.

According to official data announced on Wednesday, the 9.54% annual fall was the biggest since 1999. At the end of the year, the total numbered of registered unemployed still stood at 3.7 million.

Malaga also saw a record unemployment fall in 2016 of 13,553.

Union leaders and opposition politicians have criticised the low amount of permanent jobs being created.
