La Candelaria car park in Las Lagunas is now 95 per cent complete and Mijas town hall has announced that it will be in operation "in the next few weeks". This will add an extra 500 parking spaces to an area with serious parking problems.
"The works are in their final straight," said councillor for Infrastructure José Carlos Martín. The new car park is at the heart of Las Lagunas, and opposite the Regino Hernández sports centre, which makes it "not only vital for the comfort of local residents but also for the development of commerce and leisure and sports activities", he added on a recent visit to the site.
The works have cost some eight million euros.
Reasonable charges
With this new car park about to open and others in Las Lagunas on the drawing board, the town hall announced plans at the end of last week to make the parking fees as reasonable as possible for visitors and residents.
Mijas would not follow the "money-making attitude" of some other town halls, said mayor Josele González, announcing that the first hour of parking in public car parks in Mijas would be free. This will apply to the existing municipal car parks in Las Lagunas and La Cala and the Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo, as well as to the five projects at different stages of development, including La Candelaria.
A fixed fee of one euro will be charged between the second and the ninth hour. After nine hours the price will increase gradually to a maximum of nine euros in 24 hours.
