  • The rain overnight has aided firefighters who were able to declare that the blaze was under control on Tuesday morning. The fire has destroyed nearly 10,000 hectares

More rain has fallen through the night than expected, allowing the Sierra Bermeja fire to be controlled this Tuesday morning, 14 September.

This was announced by the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, in a tweet just before 7am, after being informed by the Infoca firefighting brigade.

The state weather agency Aemet has predicted more rain throughout the day, with up to 10mm expected in the area by early afternoon as the firefighters continue their work to extinguish the flames.

On Monday evening residents from five of the six villages evacuated on Sunday - Jubrique, Júzcar, Pujerra, Faraján and Alpandeire - were allowed to go home.

The fire has destroyed 9,963 hectares, making this the worst wildfire in the province of Malaga in 30 years. The Barranco Blanco blaze that started in Coín in 2012 razed 8,225 hectares.
