The first section of the Carabineros footpath reopened last week on Nerja's Calahonda beach, after almost 20 years.

The new section includes two miradors, which mayor José Alberto Armijo said "give a new perspective on the Balcón de Europa, Calahonda beach and surrounding area".

The original footpath was almost one kilometre in length and connected Calahonda beach to the east of the Balcón de Europa, with Burriana beach. However, the town hall was forced to close it in 2002 due to the danger from falling rocks.

Since then the area has been the cause of regular complaints from residents about the state of abandon, accumulated rubbish and homeless people using the area.

The new path has been funded by Malaga's provincial government, the Diputación, to the tune of just under 314,000 euros.

As well as the miradors, the work has included a new area for sun loungers, new public facilities and a garden area.

In addition to the work already completed, a contract is currently out to tender for the construction and management of a new beach bar.

Visiting the site last Thursday, Armijo said that he was "very pleased" with the result.
