Another milestone has been reached in the Malaga metro project which began 15 years ago and which is expected to be completed before the end of next year, when trains will be able to travel beyond the main railway station as far as the Alameda Principal, in the city centre.

The tunnel beneath the Guadalmedina has now been completed, linking the western side of the river with the area on the eastern side.

This was one of the few remaining parts of the project to involve excavation works, and now the lines can be laid, the electrical system installed and the Guadalmedina (beside El Corte Inglés department store) and Atarazanas (near the Casa del Guardia bar) stations can be finished.

The plans for a metro system in Malaga were first proposed in the 1990s as a way of easing the major traffic congestion in the city centre. The first stretch opened in 2014.
