Environmental officials at the Junta de Andalucía have released 16 rare marbled ducks into the wild at inland Malaga province's Laguna de Fuente de Piedra lake.

The species of duck is under threat and the regional government has been carrying out a programme to breed examples in captivity then release them under supervision at certain wetland sites around Andalucía.

The small marbled duck ('cerceta pardilla' in Spanish) is the duck species most at risk of extinction in Europe.

Last year only 48 breeding pairs were identified in Andalucía.
