With the economically important olive harvest now closed for this growing season, local producers have been taking stock of the amount of olive oil that they have been able to produce in Malaga province.

At the start of the season, expectations were that some 74,000 liquid tonnes of oil would be pressed from olives in the province.

However the result has been more disappointing, with almost 54,000 tonnes produced in the end.

Growers are blaming the lower figure on lack of rainfall and less oil within the olives.

Nationally, 1.3 million tonnes had been pressed this season up to the end of March. Growers pay close attention to the level of production and the monthly supply and demand as it effects the market price they get for their oil.
