National Police officers have arrested a wanted Belgian man in Malaga, Costa del Sol.The force said the man had a European arrest warrant against his name after he was found guilty of trying to kill a vet who was putting his dog to sleep.
The 55-year-old man, who wasn’t carrying any documentation, was found last Friday at a hostel in the city. Officers transferred him to the police station for identification where they confirmed that there was a European Arrest and Surrender Order in force that was issued in December 2020 in his home country.
According to the information provided by the Belgian authorities, the man had made an appointment with a vet, with the intention of putting his dog to sleep. While the vet was treating the animal, he tried to strangle her with a belt. The victim managed to flee from her attacker and called for help.
At court the man was convicted of attempted murder, assault with serious injuries, illegal custody and robbery with violence, among others. He was given a 15-year prison sentence.
The man arrested in Malaga is now in custody awaiting extradition back to Belgium.
