Archaeologists in Cártama have unearthed another Roman mosaic in Calle Feijóo, one of five streets in the town centre where excavation work is taking place. The discovery is the fifth mosaic to be documented in the project so far, following sections of a Labours of Hercules mosaic three weeks previously just 40 metres away.
According to Francisco Melero, the archaeologist coordinating the excavations, the mosaic pavement seems to correspond to one of the four corners of a Roman villa, possibly the same one that housed the Labours of Hercules piece.
This most recent find is decorated with geometric shapes with dolphins, fish and birds.
"These findings show the rich heritage that our locality has and this part of our history must be preserved," Mayor Jorge Gallardo said.
