A man walking a dog in Benalmádena on Spain’s Costa del Sol was shocked to stumble across a sports bag that contained a submachine gun and a large quantity of ammunition.
The discovery was made at around 3.30pm last Sunday when the man was walking along Calle Ronda del Golf Este, next to the Torrequebrada course.
He noticed a black sports bag and he decided to investigate. But when he opened it he was shocked to find a submachine gun and a large quantity of ammunition inside.
According to sources consulted by SUR, the weapon was an MP5 submachine gun with a silencer and around 90 cartridges, all wrapped in kitchen cloths.
He quickly contacted the Local Police and, after that, the National Police were notified and they have taken over the investigation.
One theory being considered is that the owner of the weapon hid it to return to retrieve it later. Sources say that the area where it was found is where there are often police checkpoints.
National Police specialists are examining the submachine gun to find out where it came from and if it has been used in a criminal act.
The MP5 is a German-designed nine-millimetre calibre submachine gun, developed in the 1960s by a team of engineers from the weapons manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K). Its name is an abbreviation for Maschinenpistole 5.
It is a smaller than a regular weapon which makes it easier to carry and hide. Its reliability makes it one of the most widely used submachine guns in the world, adopted by numerous military, intelligence and security organisations and is in the armoury of the Spanish army, as well as the National Police and Guardia Civil.
