The Solheim Cup is expected to have an economic impact of over 200 million euros

  • A recent report shows the huge financial advantages that hosting this golf tournament will have for Marbella and the Costa del Sol over the next few years

The Costa del Sol is rubbing its hands with glee about hosting the Solheim Cup of golf in 2023. Last October, the Ladies European Tour announced that this event, the most important for women's golf in the world, was to take place at Finca Cortesín in Casares, although there will also be associated activities in Benahavís and in Marbella, which will be the nerve centre during the week of the tournament.

Since then, there has been plenty of news about the advantages of the Solheim Cup coming to Spain and the Costa del Sol for the first time, and a recent report showed that this competition will have a direct economic impact of over 200 million euros on the destination and the nearby area.

This opportunity will reposition and relaunch Marbella and the Costa del Sol in the USA and other countries as a leading golf destination. The report lists some of the expected advantages of the Solheim Cup, including around 11.2 million euros associated with the organisation of the event (the companies which provide services will mainly be local). If indirect effects are included, this amount could rise to 18.2 million euros, and would create nearly 200 jobs, taking into account figures from previous editions of this championship.

Then there is the amount spent by the players and others involved in the event. During the last Solheim Cup, in Scotland in 2019, this amount was 1.4 million euros, and it could be even higher this time, bearing in mind the attraction of Marbella as a destination.

The report also includes spending by those who come to watch the tournament. Working on an average stay of 5.1 days and an average spend of 290.8 euros a day per person, this would generate 126 million euros and create around 2,090 jobs.

Finally, media coverage and publicity are expected to bring in 25 million euros, based on figures from the 2019 Solheim Cup, with huge promotional benefits for the Costa del Sol.
