The Costa del Sol's cancer support and hospice care charity, Cudeca, has said it is close to meeting its Christmas and New Year appeal target and is making one final push to achieve its fundraising goal.

Cudeca, based in Benalmádena but providing support across Malaga province, aims to fund a home visit team for one year.

Fundraising was severely affected in 2020 as the popular chain of Cudeca charity shops was closed a lot of the time and many events to raise money had to be cancelled.

In November, Cudeca set out to raise 185,000 euros to pay for one home care team for one year to help people with a terminal diagnosis receive treatment and support in the comfort and security of the familiar surroundings of their home.

Cudeca announced on Thursday this week that it had raised 179,218 towards its target and was asking the public to help it over the line to the 185,000 needed.

The campaign has been labelled the Sunflower Effect and a long list of local personalities have taken part in the appeal over the festive season, which has included a televised fundraiser as well as many individual acts of kindness to help collect donations.

Among the local well-known names were baritone Carlos Álvarez, singers Pablo Alborán and Rozalén and Miguel Ángel Martín who shared messages of support with their followers.

Also lending support have been artists Javier Ojeda, Antonio de la Torre, Diana Navarro, Remedios Cervantes, Domi del Postigo and Pablo López.

A home care team is made up of a doctor, a nurse, a psychologist and a social worker, all specialists in palliative care. They care for an average of 250 patients a year, in their own homes.

A team makes an average of three to four visits a day, giving medical, psychological and social care to both patients and their families.

Cudeca is still collecting. Online donations can be made at www.sunflowereffect.org, where may people have left donations from 10 euros upwards.

Deposits can also be made at La Caixa on bank account ES11 2100 9032 3722 0010 8366.
