Two police officers have been injured after a sports car sped off from a police coronavirus checkpoint on the Costa del Sol before crashing and injuring the pair.

It all started at 2.45am on Sunday morning at the Petunias roundabout, in San Pedro de Alcántara, where the officers were manning a check point to monitor compliance with the pandemic restrictions and curfew.

The driver of an Audi Q8 car ignored the instructions of the officers and put his foot down to try to escape.

According to the sources the patrol car in which two police officers were following crashed. One of the officers suffered cuts, but his trainee partner, suffered several fractures to her arm that required surgery.

Because of the state of the vehicle after the crash the driver of the sports car fled on foot. However, the man was arrested shortly after, thanks to the use of night vision equipment made available by the Local Police of Marbella, who collaborated in the search and arrest.

The man is described by police of French nationality, although of Maghreb origin.
