A charity pub quiz in Sotogrande has raised 12,000 euros to help feed and deliver presents to underprivileged families this Christmas.

The event was held at the expat watering hole the Hairy Lemon and also featured a silent auction with high-value prizes donated by the local community.

The windfall will provide a daily packed lunch for 100 of the most underprivileged children in Manilva, Casares and Estepona for the whole of 2021.

Funds left over will then be donated to the Christmas Gift Appeal, which will provide presents to the same families.

British expat Jo-Hannah Ruby Effer France, 50, who organised the event, told SUR in English: "I was overwhelmed by people's generosity last Saturday. This is the biggest amount we have raised in the nine years we've been doing this quiz. Times are very tough for everyone at the moment and even though people are struggling, they found money to donate to the children, which made me very emotional.

"It's been a tremendous community effort and I'd like to thank everyone involved, including the owners of the Hairy Lemon, Laurenc and Liz Hunda - without them we couldn't have held this event."

A total of 84 people maintained social distancing during the quiz, which was won by Pauline and Mike Taylor, and Simon and Steve Rhodes.
