The Salón Varietés theatre in Fuengirola has made a desperate appeal for help to raise funds to save the amateur theatre from permanently shutting its doors due to financial difficulties caused by the pandemic.

The theatre, which marked its 35th anniversary earlier this year, has had to postpone all shows until further notice, including their annual Christmas pantomime, which often provides a large proportion of their annual income.

Theatre officials claim that the ongoing uncertainty has put them in a "perilous situation" and they are reaching out to the public in order to raise 30,000 euros by March 2021 in order to meet their financial obligations.

A GoFundMe page has been set up and has so far received almost 3,000 euros.

The theatre is also asking people to organise individual fundraising initiatives and it is offering help with the promotion of any such events.

A spokesperson for the fundraising team said, "As it is the only English-speaking theatre of its kind in southern Spain, it is important that we open just as soon as we can welcome people back safely and securely. The aim is to ensure that we can continue to manage the premises and re-open for shows."
