Marbella town hall has launched a new campaign to encourage people to shop locally during the Christmas and New Year period.
It has acquired 6,000 24-hour free parking vouchers in the Mercado Central for those who present a receipt for more than ten euros from any of the businesses in the complex.
The council's shop local initiative will run until 9 January.
According to the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, the council is negotiating to sign similar agreements with other parking companies.
"We want people to shop locally and that parking charges are not an impediment during Christmas, " said Muñoz, who also announced that next year's budgets will incorporate 100,000 euros to launch more initiatives of this type with private parking suppliers.
Muñoz took advantage of the campaign launch to thank the Mercado Central for being the first to join the scheme and said she that she hopes many others will decide to support the initiative over the next year.
The manager of the Empark en Andalucía parking company, José María Fayos, also participated in the launch of the Christmas shopping campaign and said there are several other towns that have opted for this type of shop local initiative.
