At least three, and possibly four consortia appear to be coming forward to build and operate the new San Andrés marina in Huelin, just west of Malaga city centre. The bidders are made up of investment funds and specialist firms in the maritime construction sector. The marina will have 500 berths and the license will be for 50 years.

One bid is led by Al Alfia, a Qatari investment fund that is also trying to build a hotel in a new tower at the city's cruise ship terminal.

According to SUR investigations, another bidder will be the company that currently runs Puerto Banús in Marbella. Bidders expert in luxury marinas in the Balearic Islands are also expected to take part.

All participants appear to be eyeing up the luxury tourism market in their project for the site alongside the city's port.

Carlos Rubio, head of the Malaga Port Authority, said he didn't yet know the names of the bidders and that the closing date for entries wasn't until 30 November. However he said there would be at least two firm bids.

A concession for the large future marina was given out 10 years ago but lapsed in the last financial crisis. This time there is more interest in the project, which will include shops, restaurants and a yacht club.
