Work to expand the Oncology department at the HC Cancer Center by 1,050 square metres has been completed and it now boasts a radiotherapy machine, the first in Marbella and only the second in Europe.

The technology incorporates a real-time tumour tracking system which allows for much more effective treatment of cancer as it allows for shorter treatments overall and causes less radiotoxicity and fewer side effects.

Radiotherapy, together with chemotherapy and surgery, is a fundamental pillar in the fight against cancer and forms part of the multidisciplinary treatment of many tumours. Currently, more than 60 per cent of cancer patients will need radiotherapy at some point during their treatment.

In this regard, the town's mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, who visited the site on Wednesday expressed her happiness that now it would be possible to "diagnose and treat many tumours that would have previously been difficult to do in Marbella".
