During a special ceremony to mark the 32nd Día de la Autonomia de Torremolinos (to celebrate the town's split from the municipality of Malaga), the prestigious Medalla de Honor (medal of honour) was awarded to local health workers as a "symbol of respect, affection and special recognition".

The medal, which is awarded to those who have gone above and beyond to serve their community, was presented to workers and professionals of the San Miguel and La Carihuela health clinics in recognition of their tireless work and "unfaltering commitment" to the people of Torremolinos during the coronavirus pandemic.

The medal was presented by mayor José Ortiz, who said: "Today we respectfully and affectionately award the medal of our town to our health sector. We want to express our commitment as a society, because the people of Torremolinos are aware of the great debt that we owe to those who have made their profession the care of others, and that debt in these times tests our compassion."
