The Junta regional government has said that it doesn't have the money at the moment to carry out the long-planned expansion of Marbella's La Bajadilla port, east of the town centre.

In 2011, Sheikh Al-Thani, also the controversial owner of Malaga football club, won a permit to run it as long as significant investment was made to allow larger vessels to dock.

That licence was cancelled and the head of Andalucía's port authority, Rafael Merino, on a visit to the resort, said the only way for the project to go ahead is to find a new concession holder, which isn't planned at present.
