Rail operator, Renfe has chosen the Costa del Sol's Cercanías lines to begin the national rollout of so-called 'tap-in and tap-out' technology on its short-distance rail network.
From now on, passengers with a Visa or Mastercard only need to tap the card on the readers at the barriers before their journey and tap out again at their destination.
The right amount will be automatically debited from their accounts, similar to the system in use on London Underground and other transit systems. Travellers with bankcard-linked mobile apps can use these too.
The system being used is called Cronos and tickets can only be bought this way for single journeys. As 80 per cent of fares are single on the two Cercanías lines running into Malaga city from Fuengirola and Álora, Renfe expects to see a high take-up.
