A well-known local man, Mario Zumaquero, has died after being run over while cycling in an apparent hit-and-run incident in Estepona on Saturday morning.

The events took place at 6.50am, when several drivers called the emergency 112 hotline to say that a cyclist had been run over at kilometre 167 of the A-7 motorway in the direction of Cadiz. Emergency services who attended the scene could only confirm his death.

The bike which Zumaquero was riding was found several metres away from the body, suggesting it has been dragged along by the vehicle.

The vehicle involved in the crash, a silver Mercedes with damage to its lights, was located and seized on Monday but its owner insists that she was in the passenger seat at the time. The search for the driver continues.

Zumaquero, 44 from Ojén, owned an animal feed shop and was a crossfit trainer, widely known for participating in various fun runs and sporting events in the area.
