Police are searching for the individual responsible for abandoning a Spanish mastiff in a sealed bag of rubble in the Malaga neighbourhood of Puertosol last week.
A passerby made the grim discovery after hearing anguished noises among piles of rubbish.
The animal protection branch of the Malaga Local Police (Gruprona) quickly attended the scene and placed the dog in the care of city's shelter.
"The animal was dying, with almost no blood in its veins and infected with fleas, ticks and worms that were eating it inside and out," said Carmen Manzano, the shelter's president. However, after receiving a blood transfusion, Ulises, as the dog is now called, started to make a recovery.
The response to Ulises' case has been overwhelming. One local woman made a 300-euro donation towards the cost of care and numerous people have offered to adopt him once he is fully recovered.
