Skull found in Mijas woodland could belong to pensioner who went missing years ago

  • Forensic analysis is being carried out to see if the DNA matches that of other bones located in the area in 2017

An investigation is under way after a human skull was found in a wooded area of Mijas on Friday afternoon.

According to SUR sources, the condition of the skull, found by council workers during fire prevention cleaning work in a wooded area of the municipality, indicates that the individual died several years ago but the Guardia Civil are waiting for the results of forensic analysis to be sure of the date of death.

Given how difficult to access and overgrown the area is, investigators believe that the skull was most likely dug up by an animal searching for food.

Investigators are currently working to identify the deceased. One of the principal theories under consideration is that the skull belongs to a pensioner who disappeared in the area several years ago, the majority of whose remains were found in the same spot in 2017 by construction workers. Forensic analysis is expected to produce a DNA match.
