The ministry for public works (Fomento) has authorised the opening of the bridge over the MA-20 motorway that has been rebuilt to alleviate traffic around Plaza Mayor.

The new bridge connects the Malaga Designer Outlet, which opened on 13 February, with the Parador de Málaga golf course and Guadalmar junction as an alternative exit to the MA-20 motorway.

The work to knock down the old bridge and rebuild it as an alternative way out of Plaza Mayor to the motorway should put a stop to the major tailbacks shoppers experienced in the month that the outlet was open.

The original one was knocked down when the motorway was widened earlier this year.

More plans are in the pipeline to further ease traffic in the area and owners of both Plaza Mayor and Ikea have offered to cover over half of the cost to build a link road between the furniture superstore and MA-21 near the airport.

Other plans include building extra lanes on the road next to Arraijanal (on the Parador side of the motorway) and turning the current single lane road into a dual carriageway to further ease congestion between Ikea and Avenida Velázquez (the old N340) on Avenida Montserrat Caballé and the Churriana exit.
