Following on from the success of the cultivation of subtropical fruit such as avocados and mangoes in Malaga province, the next such product looks set to be the lucuma fruit, according to the Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture (IHSM), which forms part of the University of Malaga.

The fruit, which is widely consumed in Latin America and exported from Peru to the USA, Australia and Canada, could be the next superfood thanks to its various health benefits, including healthy carbohydrates and antioxidants.

According to the IHSM, there is currently no commercial production in Europe. However the institute says it has been working on adapting the crop to suit the southern Spanish Mediterranean climate for the last 20 years.

They say that there has been increasing interest among European fruit growers for lucuma, which is also known as 'eggfruit'.
