Some 2,000 residents of an area of Las Lagunas in Mijas have better access from their homes to the motorways as of this week after the opening of a long-awaited new bridge.

The bridge goes over the Arroyo Real stream to the A-387 Mijas road, just north of Lidl. It helps locals in the El Lagarejo and El Coto developments reach the A-7 and AP-7 more easily.

Planners also expect it will relieve some congestion at the busy so-called Ford roundabout and Avenida de Mijas area, the next junction on the motorway.

The bridge is part of the council's wider plan to free up traffic movement around the densely populated Las Lagunas area, next to Fuengirola.

Originally the council had put up a temporary bridge but were told to take it down by the regional government as it affected water flow in the dry stream bed below in heavy rain.
