Twenty young guitarists from 15 countries are set to participate in the forthcoming Andrés Segovia international guitar competition in La Herradura according to Almuñécar town hall.
The competition, which is in its thirty-fifth year, is open to musicians under the age of 35.
Four guitarists from Spain will be joined by two from Italy, two from Bosnia and Herzegovina and two from China along with others from Brazil, Serbia, Australia, Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Korea and Germany.
The competition will take place from 7 to 11 January at La Herradura's civic centre and will consist of two eliminatory rounds and the final, which will be open to the public.
First prize includes a custom-made guitar by British luthier Stephen Hill who lives in the town, as well as a 10,000-euro cash prize and the opportunity to perform at the 2020 city of Úbeda International Dance and Music Festival.
There are second and third prizes as well as special prizes for the best performance of this year's obligatory piece and the youngest guitarist to get through to the second round.
Hopefuls will be asked to perform a piece of their choice as well as two obligatory pieces; one in the second round, which is Manuel de Falla's 'Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy' and during the final each guitarist will be required to perform the Aranjuez concerto for guitar and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo. The guitarists will be accompanied by Malaga's Philharmonic Orchestra.
