The opening of the new Malaga Designer Outlet, near the airport, was called off this week. The British-owned addition to the existing Plaza Mayor shopping complex has been delayed while the promised access improvements are made to the MA-20, and it is hoped the official unveiling will now be in December.

Improving access roads, which already frequently become congested, was a key condition of granting planning permission for the 100-store extension by UK developers McArthurGlen.

Work on widening the MA-20 motorway was halted recently in a legal dispute over who owned land that was being expropriated. Now that the owner has withdrawn the complaint, road building work can continue, but it was too late to meet last Tuesday's opening deadline.

On the planned opening day, the designer outlet was cordoned off and some shoppers who hadn't heard about the cancelled launch were spotted changing plans and going to the existing shops in Plaza Mayor nextdoor instead.

"We've excitedly come all the way from Marbella, but we're going to have to turn around," said one French family.
