Around 50 volunteers including children participated in a chameleon census in the Cerro Gordo area of La Herradura last Saturday evening.

The event started off with an informative meeting during which experts from Almeria's Sociedad para el Estudio y Recuperación de la Biodiversidad (SERBAL) talked about the habitat and lifestyle of the chameleon, which is sometimes known as the Andalusian dragon. They also told participants what to do if they find a chameleon when out walking.

The volunteers then took part in a hike around the Cerro Gordo area, between 7 and 11pm, which is, according to the experts, the best time to find the reptiles. Farmers have also been asked to report the numbers of chameleons that they find during their harvests.
