Vélez-Málaga town hall has given the initial go ahead to a 4,680 square metre extension to the town's El Ingenio shopping centre. All but one of the political parties represented in the council voted in favour, with Andalucía por Sí abstaining.

Opposition spokesperson, Francisco Delgado, said that while he voted in favour of the extension, the town hall "must not turn its back on local commerce". He called for plans to be put in place to support local businesses.

His words were echoed by deputy mayor and councillor for Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, who called for land near the Río Vélez to be earmarked for a permanent fairground and site for the Weekend Beach music festival, as well as compensation for businesses in Torre del Mar centre.

A further two years of negotiations is expected before the work can get underway, including the project going back to the council twice as well as reports from the Junta de Andalucía.
