Controversy has erupted at Vélez-Málaga town hall after it was revealed that one of the deputy mayors, and councillor for Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, stopped receiving disability allowance in August after 18 years, to allow him to work and earn a salary exclusively for the town hall.

If agreed at the next council meeting, Atencia will receive a salary of 60,646 euros per year; just under 3,000 euros less than current mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, earns.

It remains unclear why Atencia has stopped receiving the disability allowance. According to Ferrer, Atencia himself asked to stop receiving the payment.

Opposition spokesperson, Francisco Bonilla has called into question the genuine nature of Atencia's disability.
