Environmental group in Torremolinos aims to make the San Miguel Romería "sustainable"

  • Talks on Saturday morning in the Pablo Picasso Cultural Centre in Torremolinos will focus on ways to preserve the beaches and natural areas

The Malaga-based environmental platform Viaja, Disfruta y Ayuda has organised three days of events to mark World Cleanup Day in Torremolinos and Malaga.

Talks on Saturday morning in the Pablo Picasso Cultural Centre in Torremolinos will focus on ways to preserve the beaches and natural areas. There will also be a collective cleanup project to remove household waste and debris from the mouth of the Guadalhorce River in Malaga on Saturday at 6pm.

This follows a cleanup on Friday near la Playa Surf House beach bar. On Sunday the organisation will target the thousands of revellers at the town's annual Romería de San Miguel. An information centre will be erected outside the old fire station in El Calvario, and there will also be containers where people can deposit their plastic waste. Local artist Javier Ternero will then transform the plastic collected from the Romería into a monument as a symbol of awareness.
