New regulations expected to be passed in October should offer better control on where rented electric scooters can be used and parked in Malaga city.
Once the regulations are enforced, scooter-users will be confined to cycle lanes and the road, as, under the new legislation, scooters will fall under the category of vehicles.
This will mark a distinct change from the current situation, where scooters can still travel at a maximum of 10km/h along the pavement. The new speed allowed under the regulations to be passed in October will be 30 km/h.
City councillor José del Río explains that the change comes in response to the need to "protect pedestrians".
